Mary Lois Thompson
Having begun painting lessons at age nine, Mary Lois has had a varied background in art, having studied under noted artists in Massachusetts, Carmel, and the Bay Area, working on location throughout California, England, and France with them. She credits them for developing her ability to compose, and to see shapes and values and color.

Later, Mel Brenner started her experimenting with the qualities of the media of acrylic and oils.Most recently Mary Lois has been working in collage.

Her works reflect her interest in paper making and dyeing. She loves the textural surfaces one can build up on either canvas or paper. She now uses water media.The non-representational work she is now creating uses the same rules of composition, color, shape, and value that she learned in her more representational work, but without the anchor of realism.
