Born and raised in Stockton, Susan remembers being encouraged
by her artistic grandmother to draw, paint and explore
creatively. But a fascination with small things (seeds,
beads, rocks, marbles, shells), the natural world, and how things
work, led her to pursue an education and career in the microbiological
sciences.
After several years of laboratory work (and crafting beaded
jewelry as a hobby), a return to Stockton allowed for instruction
in both lamp worked beads (melting glass rods with a torch) and
fusing art/dichroic glass in a kiln. She is now able to
pursue the glass arts while working part-time as an elderly caregiver,
and is eternally amazed at the wonderful blending of elements, both
technical, creative, and serendipitous, that working with a torch
and “warm glass” affords.
Quality art glass is used, imported “soft” Effetre
from Italy, Bullseye, Uroboros sheet, and CBS dichroic. She pairs
her handmade glass beads and pendants with sterling silver, gold-filled,
gold/silver-plate findings, chains, and spacer beads. Nickel
or pewter accent beads, crystals, and glass seed beads are often
incorporated as well.
She is a member of the Northern California Society of Glass
Beadmakers (SGB NorCal), a chapter affiliated with the
ISGB (International), and the Sacramento Beadmakers Group.
